Job Description:

This position is in the MaineDOT Environmental Office. The position is responsible for environmental support during construction activities and ensures contractors follow regulatory commitments. These commitments primarily come from processes under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) umbrella, Army Corps of Engineers permits, State of Maine Natural Resources Protection Act permits, and agreements with Federal and State fisheries and wildlife agencies. They also serve as a technical expert and support for resident and inspection staff for the Bridge, Highway, and Multimodal programs. The position requires a lot of travel time between projects and time in the field covering a large geographic area.

Tasks include:

  • Review of Soil Erosion and Water Pollution Control Plan (SEWPCP) for all assigned projects.

  • Participating in regular site inspections to ensure compliance.

  • Participate in regular progress meetings for ongoing projects.

  • Document all site inspections (photos and notes) into project files located in the CPD e-file.

  • Train/ educate construction staff and contractors on construction best management practices.

  • Review draft contract documents for constructability and language review.

  • Assist in trainings for new MaineDOT Environmental Office staff on construction.

  • Advise residents and inspections on best in water work practices for water management.

  • Assist in MaineDOT efforts to update specifications and BMP manuals.

  • Assist construction team in submittal of work start notifications required by Army Corps of Engineers. Quality and timely communication with team members.

To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:

Eight (8) years of experience in engineering -OR- a Bachelors Degree in Engineering or a related technical field and four (4) years of engineering experience -OR- an Associate Degree in Engineering or a related technical field and six (6) years of experience in engineering.
